I have received a variety of comments throughout my life on the way in which I present myself.  My posture, my stance, my presence has been described as:

  • Confident
  • Sophisticated
  • Exotic
  • Guarded
  • Closed
  • Warm
  • Welcoming
  • Shy

I find it rather interesting that my body language has been interpreted so differently.  From portraying strength and beauty and then to displaying a fearful heart, my language suggests my mood or my daily disposition vastly affects the way I am perceived.
More than that, though, I also believe I am greatly affected by my surrounding environment, and that is translated into my posture.  And, based upon intricate an detailed observations of others, this must be true for just about everyone.

As my self-perception has changed dramatically over the past year, through growth, development, and transition, I find it fascinating to listen to Amy Cuddy’s TEDTalk regarding the importance of “standing tall.”

“Body language affects how others see us, but it may also change how we see ourselves. Social psychologist Amy Cuddy shows how “power posing” can affect our brains, and might even have an impact on our chances for success.”

  1. Gee, maybe that’s why the drill sergeant is always on your case about posture. “Stand up, soldier!!!”
