Za’atar is a generic name for a family of related Middle Eastern herbs. The name za’atar alone is usually the name for a culinary condiment made from dried hyssop leaves, mixed with sesame seeds, sumac, and often salt, as well as other herbs and spices.

As we all strive to eat more fruits and veggies, get your superfood veggie game on with this delicious Mediterranean salsa recipe. Serve with pita chips, fresh veggies, and even alongside hummus!


Superfood Za’atar Salsa

2 large tomatoes, cored and chopped finely
1/2 yellow onion, finely chopped
1 clove garlic (fresh or roasted), finely minced
2 tsp. Za’atar seasoning**
2 tsp. extra virgin olive oil
fresh parsley leaves

Mix all ingredients together and allow the flavors to marinate for at least 2 hours.

**Za’atar
1 tsp. dried thyme
1 tbs. ground cumin
1 tsp. ground coriander
1 tsp. toasted sesame seeds
1 tsp. sumac
1/2 tsp. sea salt
1/2 tsp. chili flakes
Toss all the spices together and store in an airtight container.
