Baked Apple in Walnut Chocolate Drizzle

The Son of Man (French: Le fils de l’homme) is a 1964 painting by the Belgian surrealist painter René Magritte. It is perhaps his most well-known artwork.

Magritte painted it as a self-portrait. The painting consists of a man in an overcoat and a bowler hat standing in front of a low wall, beyond which is the sea and a cloudy sky. The man’s face is largely obscured by a hovering green apple. However, the man’s eyes can be seen peeking over the edge of the apple. Another subtle feature is that the man’s left arm appears to bend backwards at the elbow.

In another attempt at artful inspiration with food and cooking, I recreated an edible form of The Son of Man.

Not only are the flavors enticing, but so is the premise ~

About the painting, Magritte said:

At least it hides the face partly well, so you have the apparent face, the apple, hiding the visible but hidden, the face of the person. It’s something that happens constantly. Everything we see hides another thing, we always want to see what is hidden by what we see. There is an interest in that which is hidden and which the visible does not show us. This interest can take the form of a quite intense feeling, a sort of conflict, one might say, between the visible that is hidden and the visible that is present.

The visible and the hidden: “There is an interest in that which is hidden and which the visible does not show us.”

What sort of intense feelings do you have in your life between what you can see and what you really know?

The Son of Man – Baked Apple in Walnut Chocolate Drizzle

1 large green apple, cored
2 tsp. brown sugar
1/4 cup walnuts, chopped
1.5 oz. dark chocolate

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Fill the cored apple with the brown sugar and drizzle with a few walnuts. Bake for about 45 minutes, until mostly soft.
In a small vessel, melt the chocolate until smooth, stirring in the remaining walnuts. Drizzle over the baked apple.

What you can see is the apple and chocolate, what you can’t see is inside the heart of the apple. What is in your heart that we cannot see?

    1. I’m not sure how the Son of Man tastes either, but I do know that I LOVE apples and chocolate and walnuts are pretty darn great too!
